Scenic Journey

Today on my way to work as I was driving along belfast I saw someone run out from a driveway and follow along the side of the road. (this is odd enough on belfast, as there's hardly any pedestrians) He was about average height, maybe a bit taller, what appeared to be dirty blonde hair, cut short. Nice toned legs and biceps but not overtoned. He was wearing dark shorts, and get this, a sleeveless black mesh t-shirt that showed off his torso as much as it covered it up. I think the partial mystery while still clearly showing all the details of his body made it even more enticing than if he'd been shirtless. blond jocks are not my usual taste but this guy was male beauty personified and even I had to appreciate that. And I did, I slowed down until I realized there was someone approaching fast behind me. mmmm... A nice scenic start to the day :)

Unsettling Revelation

Wow... I haven't been online since may 20th, what can I say: Sims 3 is just that awesome :)

Today I downloaded my bank records for the last 7 months for some light reading. January~April my balance was climbing steadily. After that it plataeued and now has started to decline, albeit slowly.

In January I forcasted my income vs expenses and figured I'd be debt free in ~24 months. Today I ploted out with real data and in ~24 months I won't have anything left, with just as much debt as today.

In the last few months I've spent $3k on car repairs, computer upgrades, and weekend trips, my original estimate didn't include any expenses of that magnitude.

I've examined all my expenses and have a plan to "tighen the belt" where I can, but
all my controllable expenses put together saves me at most a few hundred extra a month which is still chump change compared to the maintence bills. Hope the car cooperates. :|

- Edit -

I realized after posting that the data was per transaction but my analisis was per diem, I replotted the graphs using time as the x axis and things don't look quite as bad. I still need more buffer to handle unexpected expenses, but my spending has actually been slowing down slightly, not speeding up as the other graph showed.

Sims 3: Let there be Sims! In 12 Days.... or now?

I preordered the game a long time ago but now I've learned a leaked copy is already out. I've been waiting almost half a year, whats another 12 days, but on the other hand it was supposed to have been out in february so I've waited long enough.

Pros of using the leaked copy
Sims Now!
No DRM!
Works without CD!
Cons
Can't download things from Sims online

The con is only a minor con since all the good stuff for the sims 2 came from other sites anyway.

The biggest issue to me is the ability to play without the CD, I hate having to switch cd's for games but I'm not willing to risk DRM damage or server outages preventing me from playing the downloaded game. I like steam, I've used them for other (cheaper) games and I know my games work even without an internet connection but EA wants to use a company I never heard about till recently. Not risking it, especially with the sims history of expansions.

I think I'll wait the 12 more days, install it, get my free stuff, then backup and replace the game with the hacked version so I can ditch the CD until I next upgrade my computer.

Virgin Mobile Customer Service Win

I'm very happy right now. For a while now I've suspected something was off with my virgin mobile account balance but couldn't pin it down. It was going down slowly like a small leak in a balloon. So I called in and requested my useage report. After deciphering the cryptic document I made a discovery: I was being charged for every single text message I had sent even though I had paid for a text messaging plan.

With the data in hand I called back and got a very cherful young lady who, once I had explained the issue, confirmed the problem, immedietly refunded the cost of the text messages based on my calculation of the data (good thing I'm honest), as well as the cost of the plan for all the months visible on the report. $50 in refunds to start and I was only going to ask back for the charges in error. :)

To top it off, she has pushed forward a request to billing to investigate back to the starting of the text plan for which the useage data is no longer available to refund all those other months of text messages too :)

I'm very satisfied with this customer service expirence. :)

Laser pointer is to cat as gravity is to humananity?

So I was catching up on my LolCatz, when I saw this. I amused myself with a rambling thought of what the cats think of the dots, and how they would react if they ever figured out we were responsible for their creation. The cats attack the dots as if their lives depended on it, and we do it because it's funny to watch them.

Now that you're sitting there laser pointer in hand teasing your cat... stop. Look at that laser pointer (not directly though) Think about what it is. Do you realize the level of technology required to make it? The laser pointer is a combination of optics, physics, and chemistry, all refined into a small cylinder you can put on your keychain. The level of technology of a laser pointer to a cat, is like the level technology of a Jedi light saber to us, and we use it as a toy. Teehehee. This thought amuses me almost as much as the cats reactions, its just so absurd: Billions of dollars in R&D, Hundreds of thousands of man hours developing and refining this technology... to make a cat toy :)

Imagine if we meet aliens one day only to discover that gravity was just a joke they were playing on us all these years? :P

Back Online

Computer is reassembled and running, The back room is starting to feel like a room, and I played descent yesterday :) These combined with a tasty Green Tea Frapuchino are making me feel much more relaxed right now.

I've looked at foutons, MatressMart had the best quality I've seen so far but they only had a few sizes and all were too big so I doubt I'll buy one there. There is this one from IKEA that I'm considering buying because its so short. It would be great for that room because its even shorter that I was hoping for, so I'd only need to find a new home for one of the office chairs, and not two. (Adam already had one and I had two, that made for 3 office chairs in one tiny tiny room)

Bookshelves, I could find ones that were as shallow as 12" but nothng narrower than 16" and the shallow ones can't really be rotated either due to where they put the walls. Maybe I'll put a plant in that space or something.

Closest. The closest is currently dominated by some of zabby's things so I've been blocked from fully utilizing that space for now. Tonight I plan at least to finish unpacking my clothes though.

Romantic Post

My parents were uber romantic for their anniversary recently and it was so sweet I had to share it. They had planned to go to dinner and a Movie and halfway through their meal they were interrupted by loud music. At first they thought it was a party but the waitress said no, it was just karaoke night and asked if they had any requests. I don't recall the exact sequence of events but the conversation resulted in my dad going up to sing to my Mom's surprise. He sang Can't Help Falling in Love [with you] by Elvis Presley. The significance of this is that it is the song my dad proposed to her with 30 years ago. He received a standing ovation and had half the ladies in the room in tears. :) yay Dad.

This next part could be a second post but I didn't want the first one to get buried.
For Valentines Day Adam and I went to the Nordick Spa and stayed there for 8 hours! The waiter brought the wrong dish by accident when we were having dinner but the maitre d' gave me a free drink and sorted it out in ~5 minutes, sweet :) The table also came equipped with weird squishy gel things in a vase, and flashing lights. squee :) We were debating about whether he was gay or not as he was very nice with the free drink, gave me a wink as he was leaving, and put too many s's in disco. We've never been there so long or so late before, it was really neat when the sun went down to watch the place transition to night mode with the lighting of torches and candles. Its a very different atmosphere at night.

Messed up waking dream.

I had one of those weird dreams last night where you go about your day normally. Though this was worse cause the time span of the dream was only a few hours so it could have been just like I stayed up late or woke up early, and I was groggy for about an hour when I woke up so the whole time span from before bed to at work was in a dream-like state anyway so I have no solid reference for when I went to bed or when I woke up, and at no point were any laws of physics violated.

I'd forgotten all about it at work but as soon as I came home I remembered it again, and every few minutes I'm like oh... wait.. didn't I already do that yesterday? and some things yes, and some things no, but I need to check every time. Some things I'm absoluety sure I remember doing... and yet stepping back through the events of the day I know that I didn't but even knowing I still remember it as if I did.

OMFG OSAP! I HATE YOU!

If you've missed the drama up till now, because my degree was a coop degree and their system couldn't handle that information, every four months OSAP thinks my student status has changed and they start taking back the pitiful loan they gave me directly from my bank account. By now I've called and waited in the Financial Aid line no less than 6 times specifically to get them to stop taking back the money early.

Since now I will be graduated and my bank loan is no longer accessible I had set aside money for one last rent cheque and enough to keep me fed until my first paycheck in 3-4 weeks. Who wants to take a guess what happened?

Yup! you guessed it! OSAP in yet another show of incompetence has switched into repayment mode 6 months early just like broken clockwork. And since I'm not registered for courses anymore I can't reset their infernal timer either so it's going to continue every month even though they aren't supposed to touch my account until June.

As of now, all the money I had set aside is used up and my account is in overdraft mode. I now have zero buffer except my high interest Visa card and whatever change I have in the house.

If you or someone you know is about to start their University career, please tell them: DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE GET INVOLVED WITH THOSE ASSHOLES AT OSAP! IT'S NOT WORTH IT! Over my university experience OSAP has incorrectly taken away more money than I have paid in fees for my Bank loan, so when I say it's not worth it I really mean it.

Grades... still waiting

4/5 Courses have reported in, I'm anxiously awaiting the 5th... but this professor took like a month to do the midterm so I doubt I'll see it anytime soon. Currently my GPA for this last semester is at 8.5 (A) which will pull my CGPA up from 7.2 (B+) to 7.3 (B+) exciting, eh?

Phone Options "Shared/Family" plans

At Adam's request here is a comparison of shared/family plans.
Again, facebook users please click the "View Original Post" link

Comparing the two sets of plans, the $40/Person pair plan from Virgin is slightly better than the $40 individual plan from virgin. Unlimited Evenings Unlimited vs 1000, 350 shared minutes vs 100 guarenteed minutes. I don't know how many minutes Adam uses yet though. I think I might like to keep my own contract so that I can more easily change it if my useage patterns change.

Weighing my phone options

This is an interactive application to assist in making choices about stuff. If you're seeing this note via FaceBook then I strongly recomend you hop over to LJ to see it (its neat, you can change the sliders to fit your needs too). Click Here or follow the "View Original Post" link.

wet dog

Theres lots of things you can do with a stopwatch

Most confusing dialoge EVER:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbIK7Q3M-mQ

Its obviously innuendo but I can barely imagine two sexy things to do with a stopwatch, not even a few and certainly not a whole list.

Time for WoW :D

Holiday's are going GREAT :D

Since the beginning of this new year I have finished working on the latest version of the Media PC software, bought groceries, Finished watching the second season of TorchWood, Preordered my copy of Sims 3, and have written a few small utility applications for my own benefit. I haven't been this productive in Months, and it feels great! :D

During the Holidays I played lots of games with Adam. One game I particularly liked was Hive, but its not a game for everyone. Its closest relative would be chess, it differs in that it only has about 15 rules, and is hex based. Adam couldn't get into it but my Dad loved it.

The event highlight was going to play Laser tag. I ended up having 7 ppl out of the 11 I was expecting but it still ended up being great fun :)

Some of the things I got this Christmas:
LCD Picture frame
Desktop Zen Garden
New Bath Towels
A Sushi Cutting board, and knife
Wasabi! Board Game

Minor Annoyance

This is the paraphrased communication with a teammate.
Him: "Behold! I declare 'X'"
Me: "... um... ok.. but 'Y' was previously declared and Y implies not X"
Him: "Pssh, whatever. I declare 'X'"
Me: "Seriously Dude: 'Y', how about x'?"
Him: "No, I'm right, you're wrong. not Y"
Me: "Y. and the proof is in W and Z. Anyone else back me up on this, or at least comment? Y or not Y?"
Him: "You're off track. You shouldn't even be concerning yourself with Y. Even if Y was declared then screw the implications! I only care about X, Nothing else is important, and besides: future generations will just pay the price of Y if there really is one. Now... Shut the fuck up I'm right. Behold lesser beings I have declared 'X'"

Where X is his "Management inspired" idea that adds no value to the product while itself drain on resources. And Y is a concern that may result in small children being abducted off the streets after school. (actually not joking here, thats just how serious the problem was)

The most annoying part is that while X is dangerous, x' is perfectly harmless. But x' isn't good enough because he wants the full power of X.

I'm not sure if this guys just on an ego trip or if he seriously doesn't care about real world implications. This is a fourth year course damnit. He shouldn't even have made the suggestion of X, because we are trained to find and eliminate the Y's and it was a text-book case of obviousness.... Its kind of one of the primary focuses of all SEG courses at some point to look for these kinds of feature interactions. The fact that I pointed it out, then he first denied it, then I gave proof then he outright dismissed the concern... This guy is almost ready to graduate and that scares me. On the other side it does sound like he'd be perfect for management.

Jake's Last Month of School Schedule

This is just so incredibly ridiculous I had to post it for you all to see. Note that at one point next week I only have a 3 hour buffer zone between finishing on time and being late. Hours available is based on my typical schedule, any blocks over 2 hours up till 11pm are counted and my only time not counted is saturday so I can spend time with Adam :P

We work too much

I've just read an essay by Bertrand Russel title "In Praise of Idleness" which I found really interesting, so I'm sharing it with you now (Unfortunetly the author is no longer alive, but its nice to see how long the problem has been progressing). I feel better having read it as I know I'm not the only one who thinks that as a society we work too much. And I dont mean like oh you worked an extra 4 hours of overtime last week, I mean like we work WAAAAY too much. like why should we work 40, or 37.5 hours a week as opposed to say 20 hours, or 10? So much of the junk we produce just ends up in landfills anyway, do you really need another cellphone to replace the one you just bought? Do you think you'll be satisfied once you buy the next one? As technology progresses we are working more, not less. This is the opposite of what should be happening and I blame the constant desire to accumulate more wealth, and things. I believe that as our efficiency increases we should not be increasing production but rather reducing the time we spend working and keeping production constant (or at most adjusting to demand), and spend that time instead expriencing life or pursuing non-work related dreams and goals.

One or more of the employers I've had in the past has often said "Your should work longer hours, you'll make more money" to which I would always reply "but when would I have time to spend it?" To which their response was always a look of utter confusion. He or she just really could not process that I dont desire money for money's sake, like seriously actually could not process the idea that a person existed who did not want more money, as if I was speaking an another language or claiming that 1+1=3.

Money is important, it pays your bills, feeds you, puts clothes on you, allows you to buy goods and services. But beyond that it doesn't help you. If you die rich or die poor you'll still die, you don't get afterlife points for the size of your bank account. I desire to earn enough money to meet my needs and to live comfortably (and possibly build up some sort of buffer for retirement in 40 or 50 years). I have so many fun chalenging projects I want to work on, but by the time I get home from work or school I dont have the energy or the focus to do them. Ironically working on these projects would also make me a better developer too. The things I love to do, and the things that make life worth living I can only ever do in small sometimes pitiful amounts because of the productivity obsessed X hour work week and our societies insane desire to constatly make more money.

We consume too much because we desire to constantly consume. Its not natural and I think its hurting us both individually and as a society. I beleive Agent Smith was painfully close to the truth in observation of our society, so I'll conclude with a quote of that observation.

"Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with its surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply, and multiply until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. " [Agent Smith, character in The Matrix]
