EA Customer Service was Great!

The other day I noticed that Canadians are being overcharged for sim points compared to the United states. Our money is currently worth more than theirs now but the website still says 1k points for 10 USD or 12 CAD and theres no option to buy directly with USD unless your billing address is in the US.

So I figured I'd open a refund request and maybe in a few weeks I'd get a few bucks back.

-Less than 24 hours later-

I get a friendly email from a customer service rep who was apologizing for the delay in responding, and enough sim points to turn being overcharged 20% into a 25% discount. :)

Woot! A good customer service expirence. :)

P.S. I know I technically didn't get a refund and that these sim points are just some ones and zeros in a database that they have an infinite supply of. Software and Content distribution costs pennies, but creating it takes a lot of time and talent. If some in game object has value to me, then I'm ok with spending actual money to acquire it. As a paid software developer myself I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't.

Game Summit February 2011

This year I played 13 unique games over two days, 7 of which were games I've never played before. Some games I played more than once so I think I've actually played about 20 games this weekend!

Here are the games in roughly the order they were played:
Set, China, In the Year of the Dragon, Ponte de la Diavolo, Scotland Yard, Dominion, Dungeon Lords, Tichu, Battlestar Galactica, Carcassone, Dungeons and Dragons: Castle Ravenloft board game, Tsuro, Atlantis

Here are the people I've played with in no order what-so-ever: MAB, Leski, Alexis, James, Myles, Eric, Geoff, Roxanne (?), Multiple Steves, John, Ben, and Gregor, as well at least three people who I forgot to take a picture of or I can't read the name tag in the photo. Great Times!

Wake up!

Hey! do you know what time it is? It's 9:30. Do you know where I am? I'm at work. :O Shocking isn't it? Know whats even better? I even had enough time to stop on the way in an grab a booster juice at the mall :)

This morning I woke up and looked out the window at the formless dull grey sky and thought to myself "Huh, what a nice morning". As I got up my second alarm went off. For those of you who don't know me I have three alarm clocks to make sure I wake up in the morning (technically 4 if you include the emergency alarm in case I get up only to fall asleep in my desk chair). For me to be awake before the third alarm goes off is rare. For me to be awake before the second is unprecedented. Even better, not just barely conscious but truly awake, with full sentence thoughts and everything. :)

Two days ago I finally bought one of those light therapy devices I've been eyeing for the last five years or so. I have it configured to turn on 5 minutes before my first alarm goes off. It shines at the side of my bed and the blue light bounces off the ceiling as well. My ceiling is completely lit up with what appears to be a morning sky, it's quite pretty. The light at my side is bright enough I can see it even with my eyes closed as long as I'm facing in that direction.

It was so nice not to have to drag myself out of bed at the last minute. It's only been two days so far but I'm really hoping this will be the case every morning :)

Civ 5 Actual Manual

Woot! forget that other website I just posted, the actual manual is available!

Civ 5 Excitement: Building

I'm starting to get a bit excited about Civ 5. I've been reading the steam forums today and found a website (well-of-souls.com/civ/) that shows a whole bunch of info about the game pieced together from various sources. I'm not sure how accurate it will be compared to the real game, but it's an interesting read in the interim :)

The game will be preloaded in 40 minutes, but I still have to wait several days before I can actually play it.

Civ 5 Preordered

Now I play the waiting game and find out if I made a good investment or not.

Milky Way

This past weekend, Adam and I were out camping near bristol Quebec with some friends and for the first time ever I could see the Milky Way just by looking up. I was sitting next to the river with no city lights, no campfires, no moon, no distractions, just starlight and the sound of the waves on the beach.

I forgot to bring my camera, but heres an image I found online in case you've never seen it either.

I also saw fireworks accross the river, as well as some cool looking ballon-lights that slowly drifted across looking like a string of ufos

Hubble 3D on IMax

I just watched Hubble 3D on the IMax screen. movie-wise it was decent. For the nerd in me though, it bordered on spiritual. I was amazed when they zoomed out and showed the whole universe. The obvious bit: our planet is one spec next to our star, our star is one spec to our galaxy, and our galaxy is one spec to the universe. And they zoomed from one extreme to the other in typical imax fashion.

The cool thing is, that there are macroscopic structures at the universal level that I never even dreamed existed. I thought the universe was just an expanding mass of chaos and apparently its not. As they were zooming out further and further the random galaxies became less random and more structured. As I recognized what I was seeing on the screen it sent chills down my spine. The structure I recognized, was organic.

Heres a side by side comparison of the organic structure I recognized, and the univserse.

Apparently, I'm not the first person to see this.

Big Wolf on Campus, AAAAaaoooooo

I just finished watching all three seasons of Big Wolf on Campus! 65 episodes in 10 days (sadly not a new record). I enjoyed it a lot :)
The main character is this "mr popular" guy who has to deal with a slight werewolf issue. He frequently "wolf's out" in response to pain, anger... excitement. other things he has to deal with are, fleas, shedding, and the urge to howl and growl at things. In human form he's smooth and clean cut, in wolf form he has fur, spikey hair and a neat beard. Sadly he didn't have a tail and also he's straight but no one can be perfect, eh?

P.S. My first post in over 6 months! wow, were does the time go?

Computer Reassembled!!!

I'm so happy I may cry :D

After many many months my computer is reassembled and working. Last night I played a 3D space game that neither my laptop nor netbook could even _think_ of playing, tonight I will play Sims 3, next I'll buy Dragon Age Origins, I'm also going to pick up my text adventure game (back it up to another location) and continue working on it after a painfully long hiatus... so many things to do again now that I can. Heres hoping I get Sims 3 World Adventures for Christmas. How much longer till I can go home today. :D
